Branch Championship points were up for grabs as The Under 13 Boys Eurobodalla Soccer team took on Shoalhaven last Saturday in Moruya. 

With only three games remaining in the competition, the winner of this match has a great chance of taking out the championship.Eurobodalla started slowly, but as the game progressed they started to find their timing and midway through the half Elliott was able to loft the ball over the goal keeper’s head for Euro to take a well earned lead. 
Further shots in the half from Teig and Logan unfortunately sailed wide, and right on half time Shoalhaven were able to slot the ball in from wide out to equalise.  With the scores locked at one at the break, the game was for anyone’s taking.  Blake and Zac had been particularly strong in the first half, consistently taking the ball down the wing, while Kye, Nick and Damon worked hard in defence. 

In the midfield, Tom and Alex were linking well and Euro looked set for a strong second half.Unfortunately, in the blink of an eye, Eurobodalla were suddenly down after a goal in the first minute, followed by a controversial penalty in the box after several players from both sides were brought down.  A further dot shot was brilliantly saved by Sam N but Euro’s chance was gone.

While Jack, Matthew and Sam J refused to give up, Shoalhaven had the game in their keeping.  Eurobodalla were able to rally and were the better side for the last fifteen minutes, getting several shots in but the Shoalhaven goalie was equal to the task, making a memorable save against a booming drive from Alex.

A final score of 3-1 to Shoalhaven puts both teams equal on the points table with two rounds to play.  This Eurobodalla team is a strong side, and with a little luck will give Shoalhaven a run for their money again in two weeks time in Nowra.

The U14 Eurobodalla boys are playing with increasing confidence; ably assisted this outing by two U13 players.  This confidence was rewarded by an early goal from Jack O’Donnell who showed great form all game.

The team continued to challenge Shoalhaven with Will Wright, Callan Lee and Kailem Strahan working hard to win the ball mid-field and create ongoing attacks.  This led to a second goal from Brae Campbell who demonstrated his usual outstanding speed and skill.

One of Euro’s best opportunities came from one of the excellent crosses made by Will Smith who also performed solidly in defence.  The cross curved to the far post to be met by Jack O’Donnell who had made a brilliant run. 

Gutsy performances from Alex Gwynne, James McInnes and Luke Seaman drove a defence that was only breached once before half time when a corner ball rebounded off our player, was saved by goalkeeper Alex Filmer-Smith but then fell to Shoalhaven to score.

A second half goalkeeper change saw Alex moving forward to make some useful attacks.  After performing well outfield, Kurt Mayo-Ramsay took over making some valuable saves.

Later, Brae was unlucky to have a goal disallowed for offside as Shoalhaven made the team work hard to maintain their lead to the final whistle.

For the third time this season, Eurobodalla squared off against the Queanbeyan based side, this time on home soil.  With the score at one game each, a close and exciting struggle was expected.
Nick took the reins as captain for the day, and from the opening minutes, it was evident that neither side was prepared to let the other get on top.  Play travelled from one end to the other, but Euro showed a strong commitment to attacking the player with the ball and continually turned defence into attack. 
Matthew at the back, along with Logan, sent the ball down field where Blake in particular made some strong runs down the wing and midway through the half he was able to send a perfect cross through to a flying  Alex who headed it into the net for an early lead to the home side.
Monaro came straight back and two driving shots hit the crossbar but Euro were able to scramble well enough to keep them bay.  Kye, Damon and Jack worked hard with Sam in goal while up front, Zac and Elliott were beginning to find some space. 
The half time score of 1-0 was a testament to the effort put in by both teams.Early in the second half Euro had the chance to go two up but a shot from Teig went within centimetres of going in. 
From this point, Monaro appeared to steady and began to launch some excellent passing raids.  Tom and Sam J ran themselves into the ground in defence, but the heat and fatigue began to take its toll on the team and the Panthers were able to score three goals in the space of ten minutes for a 3-1 win.
After such a promising first half, the team was disappointed that they were not able to sustain it for the full match but every player gave their best effort and Euro was beaten by a better side on the day.
Coach’s award went to Kye for an outstanding effort in defence, while the Player’s award went to a well deserving Blake who put his body on the line for the team.Next weekend’s match against Shoalhaven will have a big bearing on which team takes out the Southern Branch Championships.

Calling all young interested soccer players 

The Eurobodalla Football Association adopted a new initiative during the 2008 soccer season; the Under 9s Development Program. The program was designed to promote the talent of enthusiastic, motivated and skill potential nine year olds in the Eurobodalla region. This program expanded the following year; retaining the Under 9s as under 10s and brining in the next under 9 group. 
The U/9s and U/10s Soccer Development Program focused on teaching young players to enjoy the game. The major component of the program is geared towards player development, through fun and entertaining game based drills and small sided games with a limited amount of verbal coaching. Ideally young players should be mastering playing technique and game awareness without realising it.  “DON’T TEACH ME LET ME LEARN”.

 The second component of the development program is home training. If a player wishes to further their soccer outside of the club system, it suggested they undertake a reasonable amount of home training. These various drills are designed to give a player touch on the ball. The quicker a player can bring the ball under control the more time they have. A simple view of the game is TIME = OPTIONS=GOALS  

The final component of the program is playing games. More to the point “age appropriate”. That is playing games on modified fields with modified rules. Football Australia is implementing small sided modified games across the nation. Hence the concept started on Monday nights under lights the A LEAGUE .                     Lots of touches, lots of decision making and problem solving on kid sized fields  

The A League is a mixed age  7 v 7 format. Players will be graded on their playing ability or potential playing position and placed into evenly matched playing squads. Players from the current EFA Rep. System will be involved. These teams will compete in a 5 week competition to be played at Captain Oldrey Park Broulee on Monday nights

The Eurobodalla Football Association has launched two exciting soccer development programs, aimed at the shire’s U9 and U10s players.  The programs aim to develop players’ football skills while playing exciting small sided games and having fun. 

 

Ten’s Thunder Program is at 4:30 pm on a Monday afternoon at Captain Oldrey Park, Broulee, and is for male and female soccer players born in 2002.  The program runs for 16 weeks.  The $150 cost includes a training strip for each player. 

 

Nine’s Nitro Program is at 4:30pm on a Tuesday afternoon at Captain Oldrey Park, Broulee, and is for male and female soccer players born in 2003.  The program runs for 16 weeks.  The $150 cost includes a training strip for each player.

Eurobodalla Rep Football Squads Ready For 2012 Season

 

THE best soccer players in the shire have been picked to compete for Eurobodalla against teams from throughout southern NSW and the ACT.

 This year’s coaching group (pictured) put the talented boys and girls through their paces to select the final players in age groups ranging from Under 11s to Under 16s – seven squads in total.Development Squad Coordination Group member Sean O’Donnell said: “We’re organised and ready to go for the rep season in 2012.  It's going to be an exciting season for our local kids - watch this space for updates on how our kids go in their big games and come along and cheer them on in the home games.” 

Some age groups were more competitive than they have ever been, demonstrating the strength of the sport at grass roots level in the region.  Under 13 Boys’ coach Nigel Jackson said: “It was incredibly hard to whittle down to a select squad from our outstanding starting group.  All the players who tried out demonstrated strong skills, excellent commitment and good fitness levels.

I’m confident our final team will be good enough to take on anyone. Rep soccer is great fun to watch and very competitive so I’d encourage everyone to come along for the matches and join the Euro cheer squad!”

 

The four boys regional squads are: Under 11, Under 12, Under 13 and Under 14 and the three girls squads are: Under 11&12s, Under 13&14s and Under 15&16s.

 

All teams are registered for the Southern Branch Championships and will play teams representing the Far South Coast, Shoalhaven, Southern Highlands and Southern Tablelands.  They will also be competing in the Lightning Cup in Canberra against teams from the ACT and NSW.
